Case Study - Oil and Gas Distribution

Mainframe Application Transformation for an Oil and Gas Distribution Company in Asia Pacific

Need for the Project

Our Client heavily relied on legacy mainframe systems, housing extensive lines of online/batch code and IBM Data Management tables. The legacy Natural & Adabas technology posed operational challenges, prompting a shift toward a Microsoft Windows and SQL Server environment. This strategic move aimed to:

  • Reduce operating costs.
  • Curb the economic impact of limited reach.
  • Enhance system architecture and infrastructure to handle modern scalability demands,
  • Alleviate performance bottlenecks, system instability, and lack of agility.
  • Address recruitment challenges for mainframe experts.
  • Preserve existing investments.

CGS Role

CGS Technologies Inc. (CGS) played a pivotal role in a transformative initiative, spearheading the modernization of legacy systems. Our primary objective was to seamlessly transition the client’s mainframe-centric Accounting System to a contemporary, externally integrated platform, fostering innovation and enabling agile development. To achieve this, CGS conducted a comprehensive assessment of the existing mainframe system, scrutinizing its infrastructure, architecture, and envisaged scenarios. Through meticulous fit-gap analysis, we proposed tailored modernization options, carefully evaluating alternatives and analysing their benefits.

The transition involved converting Natural code to C# and restructuring JCL code into PowerShell. Shifting from Adabas to Microsoft SQL Server optimized data access and system performance. This strategic transition aimed to streamline technological resources, fortify security measures, optimize functionality, and mitigate risks associated with outdated legacy platforms, contributing to a resilient and future-ready IT infrastructure.

Benefits of the Transformative System

The modernized application served approximately 108,000 internal users managing diverse accounting processes nationally and internationally. Additionally, around 300,000 external users accessed business data and submitted requests through the system.

  • Expanded Global Outreach: The implementation led to an increase in global reach, enabling wider accessibility and engagement.
  • Cost Efficiency: The transition resulted in reduced costs and operational expenditures, contributing to overall financial efficiency.
  • Maintenance-Free Operations: The migration from the legacy on-premise system to Azure eliminated the need for ongoing maintenance, streamlining operational processes.
  • Enhanced Reliability, Accessibility, and Scalability: The transformation improved the system’s reliability, accessibility, and scalability, catering to the organization’s evolving needs for future growth.
  • Elevated Security Standards: The project significantly improved the security posture, ensuring a more robust and resilient framework to safeguard against potential threats and vulnerabilities.
